At our church, we practice communion every Sunday which means that we need one song every weekend that fits with themes of the sacrament. This is both constricting at times and also a good motivation to think creatively. This past Sunday, I wanted to sing Donnie Harper’s song, “Praise Him” for the Lord’s Supper at the end of the service. The song has a wonderfully reverent feel and the harmonies and ¾ feel are recognizable as coming from the traditional gospel genre. The verses speak to the fact that Jesus is worthy of praise and that God is our rock and our hope of salvation. These fit with communion, but I thought that it wouldn’t hurt to add a verse that is more obvious. So here is what I came up with.
As we all break this bread
And as we all drink this cup
We remember His mercy
And we praise him for His love.
