Multicultural Worship Leader Summer Internship - Hands-on experience leading worship in a historically cross-cultural church.

New City Fellowship is a cross-cultural Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) church in beautiful Chattanooga, TN that offers a full-time worship leader internship with a team focused on the Gospel and racial reconciliation in a fun and musically-challenging work environment.

The Position: We’re looking for a summer intern (mid-May - mid-August) with an interest in becoming a worship leader, especially in the PCA. In addition to the usual work worship leaders do each week, we also partner with East Lake Expression Engine to teach musicianship and the gospel to children. You will learn about worship-leading, racial reconciliation, and mercy ministry from leaders with decades of experience. We offer housing with church members.

The Church: New City Fellowship at Westminster began in 1968 as a Sunday School ministry to urban African-American youth. By God’s grace we are now a mid-size church and the catalyst for a growing movement of churches and ministries sharing the same mission: to serve the poor and to reconcile all nations to God and each other.

Our Vision: To be a cross-cultural worshipping community, centered in the Gospel of Jesus Christ that produces discipled believers who become God’s instruments of grace, justice, and mercy.

The Music: Our music encompasses original music written by members, traditional and contemporary gospel, traditional and retuned hymns, and contemporary Christian music, as well as multilingual music from Latin America and Africa.

The Location: We’re based in Chattanooga, TN, also known as the Scenic City for its beautiful vistas, and the Gig City for its gigabit fiber optic internet service, which is among the fastest in the western hemisphere. Chattanooga is also a deeply divided city. While home to numerous colleges, tourist attractions, and family-friendly activities, its poverty rate is higher than the national average (statistics place it between 22%-30%, compared to 15% nationally). It’s also considered one of America’s most dangerous cities. New City Fellowship seeks to reach out into that brokenness.

Why Should You Apply?

  • To work with a large pool of professional and amateur musicians, vocalists, and tech staff playing and singing technically demanding worship music from all kinds of genres.

  • To learn from leaders with decades of experience in music performance, worship-leading, racial reconciliation, and mercy ministry.

  • To work in a church founded on a vision for racial reconciliation and cross-cultural ministry.

  • To spend time teaching kids the gospel and musicianship skills in one of the few faith-based El Sistema programs worldwide, the East Lake Expression Engine (eastlakeexpressionengine.com). During the summers the organization runs an intensive music camp that features choir, instrument lessons, orchestra, musicianship, bucket band, a special songwriting week, and more. While Expression Engine is focused on equipping the youth with valuable skills and abilities, its true mission is surrounding children in a gospel-centered environment.
